When people hear the words 'senior center,' what comes to mind? If you're picturing folks sitting around playing checkers and talking about the good old days, think again. At Montco SAAC, we are flipping the script on aging—proving that growing older is about learning, thriving, and staying active and engaged in life.
But we also know we have a perception problem. Too many people hear "senior center" and think, That's not for me. And honestly, I get it. The phrase can bring up outdated images of aging that simply don't match reality. That's why we're moving away from that term and embracing something that better reflects who we are and what we do—we are 50+ Activity Centers.
A Personal Wake-Up Call
Not long ago, I was at a tabling event near a YMCA, talking to people in our demographic. As they walked by, a few stopped to ask what Montco SAAC was. But as soon as they heard the words "senior center," their response was almost immediate:
"That's not for me."
The irony? These were people heading into the Y for a workout or a fitness class—yet these are precisely the kinds of activities Montco SAAC offers at our centers. They were already prioritizing health, connection, and staying active. Still, the term "senior center" made them feel like we weren't talking to them.
That moment reinforced something I've known for a long time: Aging isn't the issue. The way we talk about it is.
Montco SAAC serves people in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. Our members aren't just looking for a place to pass the time—they're staying fit, learning new technology, exploring music the arts, and building connections. This isn't a place where people sit around. It's a place where people show up, move, learn, and engage in a diverse range of activities.
That's why we are changing how we talk about who we are. We aren't just a senior center—we're Activity Centers where aging isn't about slowing down. It's about continuing to grow.
Redefining Aging, One Story at a Time

Take Monali, a member of Montco SAAC. After losing her husband of 50 years and moving in with her daughter, she worried about feeling isolated in a new place. But after joining Montco SAAC, she found more than just activities—she found a vibrant community. From Zumba to painting to gardening workshops, Monali's days are now filled with movement, creativity, and connection. She's made new friends, shared her experiences, and found a supportive network that has brought happiness back into her life.
"There's no place for color, religion, or age here," she says. "Here, I find happiness again." This is the kind of inclusive and accepting community you'll find at Montco SAAC.

Then there's Carol, who moved to Ambler in 2021, grieving the loss of her husband. Unsure of what to expect at Montco SAAC, she joined our fitness classes and quickly saw the impact—not just on her physical health but on her spirit. Her health improved, she made new friends, and most importantly, she rediscovered joy.
And then there's Esselyn from our Norristown Center. She took our AI Scams Prevention class, a comprehensive course that educates about the dangers of AI scams and how to prevent them, and left with a sense of dread about how powerful AI scams have become. A few weeks later, she heard about our AI Writers' Studio, where we use AI to co-write novels. This unique class combines the creativity of writing with the power of AI, allowing participants to explore new ways of storytelling. When I encouraged her to check it out, she immediately shook her head—"Oh no, that AI isn't for me!"
But I knew she'd love it if she gave it a chance. After a little convincing, she attended a session. After her first session with our AI writing co-author, she told me: "That AI is all right! I never knew it could do all that." She was hooked—and now she's an integral part of our Writers' Studio, bringing new ideas and creativity to the group.
These stories aren't the exception—they're the new reality of aging.
